Established in 2010 Whisky and Alement is a unique whisky bar, single malt bottle shop and School of Whisky. Located in the Melbourne CBD the Whisky and Alement bar has over 800 whiskies on pour, with 10 new whiskies added weekly to create a constantly evolving drinks list.
At their School of Whisky, the passionate and knowledgeable staff present a wide range of whisky masterclasses, group tastings and whisky events. And if you are looking for a drop to take home the onsite bottle shop has over 80 rare & unusual single malt whiskies from around the world.
With this fantastic combination of whisky experiences it is no wonder that Whisky and Alement are finalists for the 2017 Best Australian Whisky Bar and 2017 Victorian Bar of the Year in the Bartender Australian Bar Awards.
Upstairs at the venue the sister bar Melbourne Whisky Room specialises in vintage, collectable and independent whisky and whiskey to try or buy. Operating only 3 days a week, this rare whisky bar also caters to group tastings and private events upon request.
For this issue of Whisky Scene Julian White from Whisky and Alement has designed a short flight featuring The drams of Nikka.
Nikka has two main single malt distilleries which make up the core flavours of The Nikka 12 Year Old, Miyagikyo and Yoichi. The Nikka 12 Year Old blend also includes grain whisky from the Coffey Stills at the Miyagikyo site. Julian recommends to try these 3 drams next to the The Nikka 12 Year Old to understand the complexities that form the blend.
Taste in this order:
Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky – Soft, sweet and candied fruits
Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt Whisky – Richer, thick mouth feel with dried fruits and subtle cedar.
Nikka Yoichi Single Malt Whisky – Slightly savoury, with decent amounts of peat smoke and vanilla.
The Nikka 12 Year Old Whisky – A culmination of all these 3 whiskies, perfectly balanced and blended to express the flavours of Nikka.
